I never left home till after dinner so it was a busy drive up through the Lakes, sadly as i crested Kirkstone pass i spyed the bus a few cars infront of me,so i stopped at Hartsop and tried to blag a lift further up the road, with no joy,I moved on and parked at Patterdale,no luck with the first two folk i asked, but then a very nice man from one of the pubs kindly accepted my cash for a lift too Pooley bridge
As it had been a rushed start it was only when in his van i looked at his route,my mistake i was heading to far North so i got him to drop me off at the next road junction. It was next to the Hallsteads Outward bound centre, less said about my rough route for first hour, but involved not may paths,trees/old chopped forest/brambles and 8 ft gates ! it was a relief to land on the path too the NE of Gowbarrow
After the battle we had just had it was nice to stride out on a lovely path, that took me through some lovely forest shade
Gowbarrow was Maggies 88th Wainwright,a quick message to Richard who was battling against a very strong Easterly wind as he made his way to Dockray, where we planned to meet at the pub
It was strange he had so much wind as i only had a nice breeze that helped keep the sweat dry
We left around 6-30 pm and rejoined the excellent route ahead,a diversion of mine saw us find a nice spot for the night even if the old bracken was a bit rough and sharp
Its very rare i camp this low down, but what a view we had
Handy having a pot cleaner with you |
The temp soon dropped giving -2c overnight,i took a few pics just out of the porch which showed a little Aurora colour...Maggie didnt get much sleep sadly..as soon as the sun dipped the foxes were out barking at each other and at least one pair of owls was shouting away
The purple and orange were the two short bits i did,Richard had had a big 20 mile day
Following Richards lead i followed him down to Aira falls before crossing the road
This was a path i have never walked and what a gem of a path Richard has found,to link his walk together
We followed the narrow trail around upper Glencoynce and then past the old mines to drop into the Youth hostel at Glenridding
A couple of tracks then took us over the valleys and past Lantys Tarn and down into Patterdale, where we stopped for Richard to recharge his phone again....a nice bowl of chips and some cold cordial helped quench my thirst
This walk just followed every lovely little path and track you could think off this one taking us quietly along to Hartsop village
It had been a warm day but a cold breeze found us as we started the pull up from Hayes water, with the wind now picking up we chanced on two ok pitches on the shoulder of the Knott, taking off most of the wind
Tent and water sorted, dog fed it was a lovely 16c out of the wind, but a few minutes after the sun dipped it dropped straight down to 3c
Another favorite and as soon as it was cooked through it was gone, ready for the clean up crew to lick it out
Day 3 started the same but still cold a frost of -3c and even when we left it was only 6c and much cold with the wind
A cool night with the wind gusting around as we slept away but the dawn gave some nice colour as it lighted up the central fells nicely
It was here i left Richard as he carried on his Lakeland Way as i headed back too Patterdale and my car,a very enjoyable walk and two camps, with Richards great history knowledge to listen too...its going on my list of walks to do..
Heres a link : https://lakelandway.uk/
I said goodbye to Richard as he carried on his walk, i walked across too
Once my hands had warmed up again it was a nice walk down,i removed my extra layers at the tarn and finished my walk back in my shirt
Safe travels Peter and Maggie dog
