Wild camps 2023

Another years wild camping comes to an end to add to the the many that have already passed by..

Camp 1  795m 👇👆 (2 pics) Kirkfell

So the first of the year was 20th Jan and took us too the dramatic Wasdale valley,a walk up to Pillar and a great stroll across and up to Kirkfell summit for a nice pitch on snow,the next Day we walked over Great Gable then back down to the green valleys





Camp 2 800m 👇👆 (2 pics) Hart crag

Next camp was 12th Feb and was on Hart crag as i took a lad from walk around the Fairfield horseshoe  





Camp 3 760m 👆👇 High Raise

25 th Feb saw us do an extended Kentmere horseshoe and a camp on High Raise (2 pics)







Camp 4 25th March700m 👆👇👇 Wetherlam

  I took a lad around the Coniston fells, in not the best conditions,that finally saw us dropping of the summit area to camp out of the worse of the wind and rain  (3 pics)








Camp 5 7th April 750m 👇👆 (2 pics) Mamores

The first Scotland trip took us too the Mamores for two nights the first camping low Binnein Beag

Camp 7 12th May 800m 👇 Ben More group

A return to Scotland with 3 camps spread over the 7 Munros of Ben More group,Crainlarich  (1 pic) Pitched at the col west of Beinn a Chroin 







Camp 8 13th May 870m (2 pics) 👇👆 Ben More group

 A lovely flat pitch just north of Beinn Tulaicheans summit 


Camp 9  14th May 860m (1 pic) 860m Ben More group

The third and last night was pitched on the col between the giants of Ben More and Stob Binnein

Back home in the Lakes i had a night on Cold pike 


Camp 11 28th July 620m Great Sca Fell

Was camped near Great Sca Fells summit 👇





Camp 12 4th August 710m 👇👆 Thuncar knott

 A walk around the Langdale peaks saw me and Maggie spend a lovely evening on Thuncar knott





Camp 13 11th August 450m 👇👆 Mellbreak

A very windy walk to collect the Loweswater Wainwrights and saw us hide from the wind on small shoulder,off Mellbreak,which gave great views 





Camp 14 2nd Sept. 1174m 👆👇 (2pics) Kamtjonnin Norway

Then came a trip to the Trollhiemen mountains in Norway,a dry start,wet middle,dry finish weather sort of day.But we did bag athe peak of  Blahoa 1672m,found a nice pitch next to a high lake to finish the first day of the trip

A mainly wet day left us going a bit further than we intended,as camping spots were a bit scarce,the next morning dawned very nicely

We used 2 huts on the trip but after a long hot day we found this stunning spot to camp,one of the most stunning places i think ive camped,near Fagerlidalsvatna

Our last night in Norway saw us find a tiny spot right on the Lake shore edge,Lake Gjevillvatnet

The next camp was on Grey Friar summit,having bumped into and walked with another wild camper,earlier in the day

Then after 3 yrs of walking my brother Jamie finished his last Wainwright summit,followed by a nice camp on Blencathra summit,congrats brother

Early December and the last camps,probably,of the year with a trip up to Scotland and two excellent days on the Western Drumochtor pass Munros

We had had a stunning blue sky white hills day but as we hunted for water the clag started to close on us,by 4pm when the shelters were up it had engulfed us,but the dawn was superb

We caught a touch of frost overnight and had heavy condensation,but what a start to the day it was ! Inversions galore  These are the mornings we soak up the view and quietness of a waking day  Jamie’s Trailstar with the first hill of the day Cruach Adrian 1046m looming up behind  Xmid 2 Shadowed by Ben More & Stob Binnein         Bit of drying time in the warm breeze before L.N.T and moving on  Looking North  Once on the summit of Cruach Ardrain we took the small and very steep path NE of it to collect a new Top for me,Stob Garbh.We continued East then lost most of our height,down to 430m to then start the slow pull up to the coll After many slugs of cold mountain water we left the sacks and went up Stob Bennein,fine views in all directions  The ridge Southwards  Back to the packs for more fluids and an energy boost,it was with slower limbs we slowly but steadily made our way up to Ben Mores lofty view point,my visit before had the ground and the sky all white  Crainlarich far bel

A circuit of Seathwaite,wild camp...Mld Solomid,Duomid,Scarp 1 ..

  The forcast was good with only a fresh wind to think about,Andy Beavers and myself had never met yet so he agreed to meet me and Jamie at the Carpark,Friday morning  Matt Holland had come over late Thursday so we aranged to meet somewhere on the ridge from Rosthwaite fell too Allan crags,it was a stunning day to be out  Also along on her first proper backpack trip was Maggie dog,who was very well behaved,even if she lacks Oscars loyalty,in walking partners One plan had been to camp on Great End summit again,but the wind would have made chatting hard work so we had a mooch about and found a nice shelf,near Allen cargs summit  The first shelf wasnt big enough for all of us so Jamie and Andy pitched there Duomids there,while me,Maggie and Matt went a little higher in my Scarp1 and Matts MLD Solomid  We had a nice sunset,but a full moon washed out the starry skies.Through the night the wind moved round some more,giving me and Matt some nice 30-45mph gusts,but Saturday started out stunnin

The Crainlarich Munros Day 1 & 2 Xmid2 & Trailstar shelter

With my operation  date looming,i coupled together a last quick trip “ Up North ” too Scotland.I first did these hills back in the early 90s on some of my first winter backpacking trips,things were much warmer and greener on this visit    We drove up Thursday morning and left our car near Ben More farm and a very nice man,came in his taxi and dropped us of at the layby on the Loch Lomond road,pre-booked it made the walk much better trip,I highly recommend them Ian and his son Packs hoisted up we were soon heading off,as the day started to get much warmer (Temp above was in the sun,real temp was around 17-18c) Ben More and Stob Binnein were soon showing of there great height,being the biggest Munros in this area We drank and walked and sweated and walked some more,the skies at times looking like it might help us cool down We gained the “Twistin hill “ ridge with some fantastic views coming in from all directions of the compass,my plan had been to try and camp,some where South of An Cais
