So the weather settled and folk were posting up inversion pictures,so i was smiling away as i left home at 6 am under the thick wet fog that covered South Cumbria

I met my brother at Staveley and we took one car up and over the pass too Glenridding the mist had cleared but i was still hopeful it would return

Packs on we left the cold valley and as the sun slowly rose the valley started to fill with some low mist, the cold air mixing with wood smoke

Glenridding Dodd gave a great view of the low mist crawling down the lake from Pooley Bridge,as Jamie ticked of the first new peak of the trip

One of my new favorite hill snacks put some more fuel in as we left Sheffield pike, from there we skirted around Glencoyne Head to pick off Hart side

In the sun it was 7-9 c and the views as we got higher were superb, the inversion was further away from us but all the way out to sea and further north towards Dumfries

It was getting busy as we approached Helvellyn summit so we snuck off to collect camp water, then made our way to the summit and then sorted a spot to pitch up

The views were vast with Merick out to one side and the peaks of Snowdonia clearing the inversion clouds

Its been 10 yrs or so since i owned a Tarptent Scarp1,reason for buying it again is that Maggie our Labrador will be coming in the warmer months. My last dog Oscar was very happy just in the porch on a bit of mat ontop of a Wooftub....but im TOLD this lady dog has to sleep in the inner next to me !!

The new tent has many mods over my first one,but the adjustable inner makes a big difference...for one the inner is very plentiful

Gough memorial at the top of Striding edge

The temp did drop with the sun but only too 3.2c then strangely went up to 6c and stayed there most of the night ! The full moon sadly killed off the starry skies

Even before the first glow of dawn started i could see folk coming along Striding edge and Swirls the good weather bring many out to see the dawn

Tasty Bla Bland for tonights tea

Striding Edge

It was a busy summit by the time we finally left,i took Jamie down via Swirrals edge as it was quieter

Striding edge taken through the rocks of Swiral Edge

From Swiral edge we ascended Catysam then headed down too Birks,it was really warm by now 10c,luckly the coolness of the valley lay below us

And then we were at the lake shore a few wild swimmers 😕
were enjoying the morning and various paddle boarders and folk on canoes ,were enjoying the stunning day

So another 8 new Wainwrights for my brother and possibly the last trip of this strange old year,Safe travels Peter

  1. Great photos, Pete. I really ought to take my Scarp out again. Not used for a few years.
