Hartsop and a camp on Kidsty pike summit,Duomid XL Oct 2018
With the long awaited arrival of my Duomid XL i was itching to get out,the forcast wasnt as good for the wknd so i took Thursday friday off work.
As i set off driving it looked like id made the right call and an inversion was in place,as i slipped off the main road and up the Bowness road i was in thick fog,it was no suprise as i rose above it leaving Windermere.As i raced over Kirkstone on Quite roads i was pleased to see some low cloud trapped in the valley bottom
Shoes laced up i was out of the car by 7-30 am and was greated by the distant sound of stags in rut already,this was my reason for heading over this way
It was a stunning autumn morning just above 3 c on this side of the valley with the sun highlighting the colours over the valley superbly
I never saw a soul and it was a lovely walk along the valley,robins and blackbirds shouting at me,a Buzzard riding the air above me and at a distance a lovely red squirrel too
Im assuming with the really hot summer we have had has helped with this years colour display as it was beautiful
With the valley left behind i climbed up Boredale house and then turned towards Angle tarn,now in the sun it was nice and warm too,while you kept moving at least
It was just superb to be up on the fells today
After a drop down for some water i soon had my new shelter up and a brew on the stags were roaring all day,but from this pitch i could hear them down in the valley behind me
Witht the days end came the cold and the temp soon dropped from 13c down to 2c under the clear skies
I took a few night shots but the moon started to wash things out so i settled down with another brew to sleep,only to be woken around 1am by the wind .Now there had been no wind forcast,hence my pitch so i nipped out and checked my pegging, sadly the wind was hitting the Duo right acroos the back edge
I dropped back to sleep again but was woken again at 4 am i dressed and wentout again recording a constant 35 with a gust just over 50 mph.i checked my pegs and debated taking some more pics as the moon had dropped some,but with those winds there was no chance of keeping my tripod still...good test for the new shelter mind
I woke again just gone 6 am and the wind was doing its best to remove me and my shelter from the hill,but thankfully it failed.At first it was just clag outside so i zipped up and put the first brew on...but the next hour was lovely once i got up.Really nasty windchill but the cloud was racing over the crags and i was on the edge, well just below ,of a nice inversion
The video footage shows the cloud movment really well,but my finger ends were frozen,taking pics and trying to keep the tripod from blowing over..
A breif lull in the wind of a few minutes made dropping and packing away the shelter much easier,i then just walked around in thick clag to High st and then onto Thornthwaite crag
As i left Thornthwaite the clag started to break up and i got a few nice bits before i got back to the car,id promised to get home for after dinner to be with Oscar as he cant walk very far these days
