Swedens Artic circle walk 2017 Days 5 & 6 & 7

   Day 5 dawned with a lovely sky as heads emerged from the trio of Trailstars camped below the peak of Nallü at a 1000 m,after breakfast i found i had to "dig a hole" rather quickly... the previous days dinner snack was maybe a bit rich  😞
Making a quick exit...hate wasting food !








My technique worked very well at warming damp socks in the morning !


Not long after setting off we crossed the river and made a brief visit to the Nallostugan hut,we chatted with the warden who nicely asked if we wanted to leave our rubbish in there bin.She mentined that in less than a month her stint would be done and she would leave before the snows became too deep

After crossing the valley we walked up to the Sälkastugorna hut,we had our own snacks here.We were now on the Kungsleden (a long distance walk) and for me im so glad we didnt do that walk.For me it was the only few hours of the whole trip that i disliked the constant marked small cairns made it seem false



That said we did find a lovely spot to camp again next to the river

Day 6 started wet, but as it turned out this would be the last of any rain on the trip.With half our food now eaten it was lighter packs that were shouldered up as we set off Southwards down the valley






The rain started to fade away as we made our way down this vast valley 





The valley further down was so beautiful the river just moving along as a solid deep sheet of water 





From the bridge at Sinnijohka we turned Eastwards and upwards crossing another stunning high valley, on the South side of Sinničohkka mountain

The lads dwarfed by the peak of Duolbagorni,which we camped below on a stunning bed of red, yellows and greens 




































It was with a weary head that i answered Lees call of more Northern lights later in the night...



 
 







The cloud obscured a lot but we still got a showing again !

Day 7 and after a few nights of Northern lights we were all very sleep deprived 
Weather was dry as we slowly moved off and down the valley with talk of a possible buffet lunch at the staion hut Geoff and Christine had mentioned to us 













Due to the fact that Swedens highest mountain (Kebnekaise) is close by in this valley  it started to get busier in this valley.Some friends of ours had mentioned the buffet dinner that was available here and once we had opened the door and walked in the smell confirmed we were eating here today





Im not sure what tasted better the meat,potatoes,the fresh bread buns  or the coffee all i know is , as team of 3 we did the buffet lunch proud 








Due to poplar area and the lodge that you can stay at it was a busy valley and we saw more people along with the constant Red helicopters buzzing up and down the valley..today was a short walk day !

















The lads didnt stir much after our tea but i couldnt get enough of the views and colours of this lovely area so i was just walking around our camp area sitting in different spots and just watching the days end coming on , i also got a visit from this fella 

















There was some lovely evening light as the days end drew in 






Quite unbelievabley we treated again to the Northern light show again but we were all feeling the lack of sleep badly now..but it was a great show...nearly the best of the whole trip !

 

















 A very short day of 9k...i blame the lovely lunch stop we had ...we had tried to get a bit higher for camp but could not find anywhere we liked so we circled round and back to a spot we had passed earlier

Day 7 started cold with a good frost on the ground,so it was a breakfast in bed sort of start...The weather looked like another good day of blue skies   The very pointy shaped Drakryggen loomed up into the crystal blue skies Now on Day 7 food supplies were much less and very much smaller than when we had set of,today we had 1 pass left to cross to get us to the end of the JoJo trail section  But first we had to return back up the valley to where we had dropped into it,the views were amazing  The narrow ridge of Gaskkasbakti (2043m 6702 ft ) We turned East at the end of the valley crossing the bottom of this very impressive ridge                    First part of the pass ahead 👆 This section was stunning, with the eyes constantly drawn in every direction,this pointy peak was Giebmebakti,the dusting of snow kept us checking every footstep as we tramped along the frozen rocky terrain  The memorial to a helicopter crash ...

Sweden Arctic trip 2022, Day 8 & 9

With another night time photo session it was weary heads that woke,the Trailstars "no door" option allowing us to see another good days weather was ready to great us    My cup sadly was cracked when i took it out of my pack on Day 1 off this trip,luckily some of Treadlite gears excellent Cuben tape sealed it perfectly  The day started cold again with a fresh wind but warmed as we followed the river and path down to the valley bottom Ive walked this valley section before on my first trip here and it was again alive with autumn colours,every shade of yellow was on display As this path serves the Kebnekaise Fjallstation and access upto the Tarfala science station/huts its a good path all wet sections well boarded over in the two plank style of these far Northern regions  It was on this section i got chatting to some folk,who turned out to be finishing and leaving there Science work at the Trafala station,they were surprised we had been over the JoJo trail,tell...

Sarek National Park Sept 2024.MLD Trailstar ..Day 1

This years trip was to Sarek National Park in the far North of Sweden an,area protected with World heritage status.With mountains over 2000m and 100 glaciers,a place of  both long deep narrow valleys,but also wide flat high ones.Both of which  are criss crossed with wild rivers and glacier fed Lakes all joined together by miles of high alpine tundra and only 2 bridges in the park It took us a full day of flights and trains and taxis to get to Lulea where we met up with Christie Crowler who had just finished her walk,we were to meet Matt Holland,who was going to join us,but the bad weather and the big storm had him change his plans    Hotel was ok and close to the train staition,which we needed in the morning,so after grabbing our fuel off Christie (fanks again) we went to our room and got everything packed away We then all met up and went for tea as Chrissie told us of the storm they had caught at the end of her walk,she bumped into Dale too while out hiking  Th...
